These coins were produced at the South African Mint and circulated between 1961 to 1980. Each 2 Rand Gold Cion contains 0.2354 troy ounces of fine gold. The reverse image is that of the Springbok Antelope frolicking through the grassy fields of its African savanna home. The obverse image is the portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch Colonial leader who eventually founded the city of Cape Town.
